She destroys things around her with surprise telekinetic powers. Lonely and upset, she is drawn to Stanley (Wyatt Oleff), a part-time pot dealer who embraces his dorky, awkward aesthetic. When Dina starts dating preppy jock Brad (Richard Ellis), Syd is even madder. She hates her mother, is protective of her younger brother and has just one friend, Dina (Sofia Bryant), for whom she may have more than just platonic feelings. Set in a small town in Pennsylvania (reminiscent of "Stranger" locale Hawkins, Indiana), "Okay" centers on Sydney Novak (Sophia Lillis), an angry, misanthropic teen who recently lost her father to suicide. But "Okay" uses familiar story beats and characters to craft a story that has so much charisma it practically jumps off the screen.
There's a hefty dose of "Carrie," a "Breakfast Club" homage, a bit of the Spider-Man origin story and the teen drama of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."īut unlike most of the other 1980s and 1990s pastiches that have become popular in Hollywood these days, "Okay" is more than just a generic copycat trying to get your attention via a streaming algorithm.ĭon't get me wrong, there are elements to the excellent new series (now streaming) that make it seem like it was created in a lab, by combining Netflix series such as "Stranger Things" and "Sex Education" into a new one designed to keep viewers' eyes glued to their screens as long as possible.
